Off-the-Record Messaging (OTR)

Postby Rubin110 » Thu Oct 02, 2008 3:21 pm

Hi there. I just purchased your IM client for the iPhone, it's pretty spiffy and I'm glad there's finally something filling the void.

As it stands I use OTR to communicate to many friends and coworkers via Adium on OSX and Pidgin on Debian Linux. OTR is a means to encrypt chats over every day IM protocals, such as AIM, Y!M or MSN. Many desktop based chat clients either have built in support or can support it via 3rd party plugins/hacks. All parties involved in chatting with ORT enabled must have the plugin, and have traded/validated keys.

When OTR is enabled, BeeJiveIM is unable to display the messages, as they're encrypted and show up as junk text. This is normal or as it should be, BeeJive could be a 3rd party who's gotten a hold of my AIM password and wanting to snoop in on my conversations, etc.

What sucks is if I want to use both clients. I have to request the sender of the encrypted messages to disable OTR and resend anything they did send encrypted (we're ok with having the conversation be in plain text). It would be rather nice if I could feed BeeJiveIM my key and have it decode the encrypted messages for me. This would make BeeJiveIM an incredible IM solution for the iPhone, or any mobile device for that matter.

More information about OTR can be found at this site.

I would like to second this feature request. If you do this, you will be the only (as far as I've been able to find) mobile multi-IM client to do this and it is an extremely useful (in fact I'd assert, necessary) feature. I have not yet purchased your product, but am currently trialing it on Blackberry Bold and am quite happy with it in general -- if OTR was present, it would be an instant sale to myself and a fair number of my associates, friends, and family.

Sincerely,
Lexx

I'm also for this. Adium is a major IM-klient on the Mac and it has native support for OTR encryption, Solaris also has this support shipped by default in pidgin which is also available for Linux, BSD*. Windows has support in at least Gaim.

While it's always good to have the option to encrypt your IM-sessions, it feels even more important when you go through an extra server on your way to IM-providers host. And it is as perviously stated a mess when you use OTR on your stationary host and switch to Beejive on your iPhone.

It would be a real killer feature for Beejive, i don't think any other IM has this support yet.

I just registered for this forum for the specific reason of saying, "OTR in Beejive, please!"

Seriously, that would be awesome. Like Henkis mentioned, "it's a mess when you use OTR on your stationary host and switch to Beejive on your iPhone."

The OTR feature is really needed in order to sync with the rest of the community. Without it, this nice app for which I paid, is going unused on my BB.

I would really love to have OTR as a feature as well it's really the only thing I feel like I'm missing out on.

Just one more vote for OTR. Most everything's already been said by everyone else. I just purchased the iPhone app based on many recommendations from friends, but having encryption would put it over the top.

I would also like to ask for OTR as well. I am presently a customer of IM+, a holdover from my days on WinMo (now have an iPhone.)

I emailed IM+'s support and asked about their plans to add OTR and they responded stating that they had no plans to add OTR, so this could be a defining feature for Beejive.

Thank you for your consideration.

I just joined and I want to add my voice to the chorus. OTR is a absolute must.

Its the most widely used open source encryption system for IM platforms.

Please get it done!
