Network Requirements
JiveTalk for BlackBerry supports all available transport methods on a BlackBerry, including BES/MDS, BIS-B, and Direct TCP. In order to use JiveTalk, you must be able to access the internet either through your BES MDS, your carrier BIS or through your carrier's WAP to TCP gateway (APN).

Network Auto Configuration
When you first launch the application, JiveTalk runs the Network Auto Configuration wizard to try to automatically detect the best connection to use for your device. The selected configuration is stored under the "Advanced Connection Parameters" field in preferences. You can re-run the wizard at any time by going to Preferences and selecting "Auto Config Network" from the menu. The "Advanced Connection Parameters" field will be updated if the wizard detects a different setting.

Configuring BIS-B Settings
To select BIS-B transport with JiveTalk, set the "Transport" option under Preferences to "BIS". If you do not see the BIS option, it will be because your BlackBerry does not have the required service books for BIS-B. Most BlackBerry should have BIS-B available by default. To check if you have it, look for an icon or menu item on your home screen called Internet Browser.

If you do not have BIS-B, go to Options > Advanced Options > Host Routing Table. Select the "Register Now" option from the menu. On older versions of handheld software, the Host Routing Table listing can be found directly under the Options screen. Check back on your home screen; you should now find the Internet Browser icon or list item.

If you still do not see the icon and you are on BES, check with your BES administrator to determine if your organization's IT policies allows the installation of this icon.

Configuring BES/MDS Settings
To select BES/MDS transport with JiveTalk, set the "Transport" option under Preferences to "BES". This option is only available if your BlackBerry device is on BES. If you have a corporate BlackBerry and do not see this option, check with your IT administrator about getting on BES.

Configuring Carrier TCP (APN) Settings
To select Carrier TCP transport with JiveTalk, set the "Transport" option under Preferences to "TCP". This option is available on all installations of JiveTalk.

If your BlackBerry device is GSM (SIM Card) based, it will not be pre-configured to be able to access your carriers gateway. To set the APN to use for Direct TCP, go to Options - Advanced Options - TCP, and enter the appropriate settings for your carrier. Please contact your carrier for the appropriate settings. (See http://www.beejive.com/faq/apn.html for a list of APN for well-known North American carriers).

While most carriers offer TCP access, some do not. Check with your carrier to determine if this is avaailable for your BlackBerry.

Some carriers charge extra to use the carrier APN. If you're unsure whether there are extra charges, please check your data plan contract or contact your carrier for the terms of APN usage.

- "WIFI Preferred": will connect via a wifi network if one is present, otherwise it will connect via your mobile network.
- "Network Preferred": will connect via your mobile network if it is present, otherwise it will connect via wifi.
- "Never": will only connect via your mobile network.

Network Coverage and Connectivity Indicator
JiveTalk displays the current data network coverage and the current connection status on the title bar.
- The coverage indicator icon on the far right of the Title Bar displays the current network coversage, using the standard 5-bar indicator.
- The text on the title bar indicates when you're online or offline.
- The color of the title bar will be blue when you have connectivity to the JiveTalk server. When the connection is lost (for various reasons, lost coverage, on the phone, etc.), the color will turn to gray. JiveTalk will automatically try to reconnect to the JiveTalk server. When the connection is reestablished, the color of the title bar will change back to blue.

Ping Test
If you are experiencing connection problems, you can test your connection to the JiveTalk server by running a Ping test.
To ping the JiveTalk server, select "Ping Server" from the menu on the Buddy List.

Port Access
JiveTalk uses standard http and https ports (80 and 443) to communicate between the JiveTalk client application and the JiveTalk Server. In most cases, these ports should be open to you. If you are on BES and are unable to connect to JiveTalk, it may be because your BES administrator has implemented an IT policy to block access to the required ports. In this case, you can either contact your BES administrator to open up access, or run the Network Auto Configuration to configure the application to bypass BES and use the carrier gateway.

Open Tunnel Errors
If you receive an "Open Tunnel error" when trying to connect to JiveTalk, the most likely cause is because you do not have the APN configured for your carrier. See the Configuring Carrier TCP (APN) Settings section.
